How Many Pixels in 4K and 8K?

4K isn't 4,000 pixels and 8K isn't 8,000. Here's what the numbers really mean, how they stack against 1080p, and why it matters when you scale retro pixel art.

"4K" and "8K" are marketing labels, and they hide the actual pixel counts in a way that confuses even experienced creators. Let's pin down the real numbers once and for all.

The real numbers

  • 4K UHD = 3840 × 2160 pixels = 8,294,400 pixels (8.3 megapixels).
  • 8K UHD = 7680 × 4320 pixels = 33,177,600 pixels (33.2 megapixels).

The key insight: 8K isn't double 4K — it's four times the pixels, because resolution scales in two dimensions. Doubling width and height quadruples the total.

1080p vs 4K vs 8K, compared

LabelDimensionsTotal pixelsvs 1080p
720p (HD)1280 × 7200.9 MP0.44×
1080p (Full HD)1920 × 10802.1 MP1×
1440p (QHD)2560 × 14403.7 MP1.78×
4K (UHD)3840 × 21608.3 MP4×
8K (UHD)7680 × 432033.2 MP16×

That 16× jump from 1080p to 8K is why 8K video files are enormous: an uncompressed 8K frame holds over 33 million pixels, and video needs 24–60 of those per second.

Why it's called "4K"

The "K" refers to the horizontal pixel count: 3840 ≈ 4000 ("4K") and 7680 ≈ 8000 ("8K"). This comes from cinema, where 4K DCI is 4096 × 2160. Consumer "4K" (3840 × 2160, also called UHD) is slightly narrower to match the 16:9 TV aspect ratio. Pedants will note neither is exactly 4,000 or 8,000 pixels wide — the names are rounded for marketing.

What this means for pixel art

On a 4K display, a raw 32 × 32 sprite occupies a comically tiny patch — about 1/120th of the screen width. The fix is integer scaling: display each art pixel as a clean block of screen pixels (8× turns 32 × 32 into 256 × 256 with perfectly hard edges). Fractional or bilinear scaling is what makes retro sprites look blurry and muddy.

Practical rule: when you pixelate an image, export at 8× or 16× scale. A 240 × 135 pixel-art grid at 16× becomes exactly 3840 × 2160 — a full 4K frame where every retro pixel is a perfect 16 × 16 screen block. Our print pixel guide covers the same math for paper.

Can you actually see the difference?

More pixels only matter if your eyes can resolve them — which depends on screen size and distance. The rough rule: you need to sit close enough that individual pixels approach the limit of your vision (~1 arcminute). Practical version:

  • 55-inch TV: 4K beats 1080p visibly under ~7 feet; beyond ~10 feet, most viewers can't tell.
  • 27-inch monitor at desk distance (~2 feet): 4K is clearly sharper than 1440p; 8K would be invisible overkill.
  • Phone at 12 inches: anything past ~400 PPI is wasted — which is why phone makers stopped the PPI race.

This is why 8K TVs remain niche: in a normal living room, viewers literally cannot see the extra 25 million pixels. Resolution is only half the image-quality story — contrast, color, and HDR matter more at typical distances.

The bandwidth cost of pixels

Pixels are expensive to move. An uncompressed 4K frame (3840 × 2160 × 3 bytes) is ~24.9 MB; at 60 fps that's ~1.5 GB per second. Real-world delivery leans on brutal compression:

FormatTypical bitrateCompression vs raw
1080p streaming5–8 Mbps~200:1
4K streaming15–25 Mbps~400:1
8K streaming50–100 Mbps~800:1

Fun consequence: a "4K" stream at 15 Mbps carries less data per pixel than a good 1080p Blu-ray at 30 Mbps — which is why Blu-ray 1080p can out-resolve cheap 4K streams on fine detail.

What 8K means for creators

Even if nobody watches in 8K, shooting or rendering above delivery resolution is useful: reframing in post, clean 4K downsamples (oversampling kills noise), and future-proofing masters. For pixel artists the lesson inverts — your source grid stays tiny (that's the aesthetic), but your export should be big: 16× integer scale turns a 240 × 135 grid into exactly 3840 × 2160, a full 4K frame of perfect squares. See our resolution fundamentals for why the grid size — not the export size — defines the art.

Key takeaways

  • 4K = 3840 × 2160 (8.3 MP); 8K = 7680 × 4320 (33.2 MP) — exactly 4× the pixels, not 2×.
  • The "K" names are rounded marketing labels for the approximate horizontal pixel count.
  • 8K is 16× the pixels of 1080p — which is why 8K files and bandwidth needs are enormous.
  • Beyond typical viewing distances, human vision can't resolve the extra pixels — 8K TV benefits are marginal in normal living rooms.
  • Compressed 4K streams can carry less data per pixel than good 1080p Blu-ray.
  • For pixel art on big screens: integer scaling (8×/16×) keeps every pixel a perfect square at 4K and 8K.

A note for gamers

Rendering a game at native 4K costs roughly 4× the GPU power of 1080p — which is why upscaling tech (DLSS, FSR, XeSS) exists: render at 1080p–1440p internally, reconstruct to 4K output. On a 27-inch monitor at desk distance, DLSS Quality mode is visually near-indistinguishable from native 4K while running dramatically faster. For competitive play, many pros still choose 1080p at 240Hz+ over 4K at 60Hz — frame rate wins firefights, pixels don't. Match your resolution to your priority: clarity for cinematic games, speed for competitive ones.

Thinking in pixel budgets

Here's a unifying way to think about it: every screen is a pixel budget. 1080p gives you 2.1M pixels to spend; 4K gives 8.3M; 8K gives 33.2M. Pixel artists spend that budget deliberately — a 64 × 64 sprite is 4,096 pixels of pure intention. Photographers spend it on captured detail. UI designers spend it on crispness. Whenever an image looks "off," ask where the budget went: too few pixels for the job (softness), or pixels spent where eyes can't see them (waste)?

Frequently asked questions

How many pixels is 4K exactly?
4K UHD is exactly 3840 × 2160 pixels, totaling 8,294,400 pixels (8.3 megapixels) — four times the pixel count of 1080p.
How many pixels is 8K exactly?
8K UHD is exactly 7680 × 4320 pixels, totaling 33,177,600 pixels (33.2 megapixels) — four times 4K and sixteen times 1080p.
Is 8K twice as sharp as 4K?
It has twice the linear resolution (width and height), which equals four times the total pixels. Whether you can see the difference depends on screen size and viewing distance.
Why is 4K called 4K if it is 3840 pixels wide?
The 'K' is a rounded marketing label for the approximate horizontal pixel count (~4,000). It originates from cinema's 4096-wide 4K DCI standard.
What export size should pixel art be for a 4K screen?
Use integer scaling: export at 8× or 16×. A 240 × 135 pixel-art grid at 16× equals exactly 3840 × 2160 with perfectly crisp pixels.
Is 8K worth it over 4K?
For most viewers, no — at normal living-room distances human vision can't resolve 8K's extra pixels on typical TV sizes. 8K's real value is for creators (reframing, oversampling) and very large screens viewed up close.
